He specialized in Islamic Persian and Arabic astronomical tables. Kennedy studied electrical engineering at Lafayette College, graduating in 1932. He then traveled to Iran to teach at Alborz High School, mastering the Persian language. His time in Iran fostered his interest in Islamic culture and history, leading him to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics at Lehigh University, which he completed in 1939.
