Sir John Edward Astley Troup, born on January 26, 1955, is a prominent British tax lawyer and former civil servant. He has had significant roles at HM Treasury and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), including serving as Executive Chair and First Permanent Secretary from 2016 until his retirement in December 2017. Troup also practiced at the law firm Simmons & Simmons during two periods between 1985 and 2004. As a special adviser to Chancellor Kenneth Clarke, he influenced tax policy from 1995 to 1997. He was knighted in the 2018 New Year Honours.
