Castagna held several directorships, including in Ukiah and Washoe County, where he was pivotal in the Nevada Library Association's formation. After serving in WWII, he directed libraries in Glendale, Long Beach, and ultimately the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, where he contributed to establishing a library school. Tragically, he and his wife died by suicide in 1983.
