He served as a lieutenant in the Naval Reserve during World War II, where he engaged in combat in the Pacific against Japanese forces. Following the war, Schoch became a prominent test pilot at McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, where he conducted test flights on various experimental and early model jet fighters, including the XF-85 Goblin. He passed away on his 35th birthday, September 13, 1951.
