Edwin J. Vandenberg was an American chemist known for his contributions to polymer chemistry. Born on September 13, 1918, he studied engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology during the Great Depression but also pursued chemistry privately. After graduating in 1939, he worked as a research chemist at Hercules Power Company. Vandenberg is recognized for the independent development of isotactic polypropylene and Ziegler-Natta type catalysts. He also created the hydrogen chain transfer method for controlling the molecular weight of polyolefins and worked on catalysts for polymerizing epoxides and oxetanes. He received several prestigious awards for his work.
