He earned his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1932 and joined the faculty at the University of Berkeley, later becoming associated with the Berkeley Radiation Laboratory in 1934. During World War II, he conducted research in radar and sonar technologies as well as nuclear weapons. McMillan shared the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Glenn Seaborg. He became a professor at Berkeley in 1946 and served as the director of the Berkeley Radiation Laboratory from 1958 until his retirement in 1973.
