Born into a farming family, he experienced a difficult childhood that influenced his later works. He trained as a teacher but shifted to writing, publishing his first novel in 1963. His main work, a six-part series, covers the post-war community life in Northern Savonia. He drowned in 1988 while returning from his summer home.
