Eisaku Satō (1901-1975) was a Japanese politician who served as Prime Minister of Japan from 1964 to 1972, making him the third longest-serving prime minister in Japanese history. He entered national politics in 1949 as a member of the Liberal Party. Satō held various cabinet positions and organized the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics. His premiership was characterized by rapid economic growth and the return of Okinawa to Japanese control. He also committed Japan to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1974 for his efforts.
