Ekambaram Karunakaran is a former Indian weightlifter, born on June 6, 1954. He made history by being the first Indian to win a gold medal in an international weightlifting competition at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada. Competing in the men's flyweight event, he represented India at the 1980 Summer Olympics. His athletic career lasted over a decade, during which he achieved significant recognition including the prestigious Arjuna Award from the Government of India in the 1978-79 year.
