Elda Neyis Mosquera García, known as Nelly Ávila Moreno or by her alias Karina, was a prominent commander in the Colombian rebel group FARC from 1988 to 2008. She was the only woman in FARC's leadership and commanded the Frente 47 unit, operating primarily in Chocó, Antioquia, and Caldas departments. Karina faced numerous allegations including kidnapping, murder, and insurrection, and was implicated in multiple massacres during the 1990s. In 2008, she surrendered following negotiations and was sentenced to 33 years in prison, but was released on probation shortly after her conviction.
