Gates played a key role in handgun metallic silhouette shooting and led the International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association, publishing a notable newsletter. His legacy includes advancements in ammunition technology and a remarkable collection of big game trophies, which sadly were lost in a fire before his death on November 16, 1988.
