Elgiz Karimov was an Azerbaijani national hero and martyr of the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. Born on January 5, 1971, in Barda, he completed his secondary education in 1987 and was called up for military service. He volunteered to defend his homeland and fought valiantly against Armenian forces. On March 12, 1992, he died heroically while attempting to save his comrades in Nakhchivanik, Xocali District. He was posthumously awarded the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan by presidential decree on June 7, 1992.
