Born on June 21, 1928, in Osnabrück, she studied theology, Catholicism, philosophy, and German studies in Münster, passing her state examination in 1952. She obtained her doctorate in 1954 under Joseph Ratzinger and Uta Ranke-Heinemann, becoming the first woman to earn a doctorate in theology at the University of Munich. Gössmann was married to historian Guillermo Gössmann and had two daughters and two grandchildren.
