Elizabeth Catlett (April 15, 1915 – April 2, 2012) was an American and Mexican graphic designer and sculptor known for her portrayal of the African American experience in the 20th century, often focusing on women's experiences. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., to educators and descended from freed slaves, she faced challenges as a Black woman artist. Catlett devoted much of her career to teaching and received a fellowship in 1946 that allowed her to work in Mexico City. Her art blended abstract and representational styles, influenced by African and Mexican traditions, with a focus on social messaging.
