She played a critical role in the early development of the Internet, overseeing the Network Information Center (NIC) at Stanford Research Institute, which managed the early directory of the Internet before it was known as such. Known as 'Jik', her contributions helped transition the system to using Domain Name System (DNS) and introduced important domain suffixes including .net, .com, and .gov.
