Elizabeth Kaufmann Koenig is an Austrian Jew, naturalized American, and Holocaust survivor born on March 7, 1924, in Vienna. She is known for her diary, which chronicles her family's experiences as refugees following Austria's annexation by Germany in 1938. The family fled to France, but with the arrival of German troops in 1940, they became refugees again in the Vichy regime's free zone. In early 1942, they received an emigration visa to the United States, thus avoiding deportation. Her diary is one of the few from occupied France during the Holocaust.
