She served as a board member of the Afrikaanse Skrywerskring and as editor of the Afrikaanse Tydskrif vir letterkunde. She was the first woman to receive the Gustav Preller medal in 1982 and to hold various prominent positions, including Chancellor of Stellenbosch University. Botha contributed significantly to Afrikaans literature and culture, earning multiple accolades throughout her career. Her impact and legacy in the field of Afrikaans literature earned her the title "The Elven Queen of Afrikaans Literature" by fellow writer Marlene van Niekerk.
