Ellison Onizuka was an American engineer, astronaut, and USAF test pilot from Kealakekua, Hawaii. He was notable for being the first Asian American astronaut and the first person of Japanese descent in space. Onizuka flew on the Space Shuttle Discovery during mission STS-51-C. Unfortunately, he died in the 1986 Challenger disaster while serving as a mission specialist on the STS-51-L mission, which tragically ended with a catastrophic in-flight failure shortly after launch.
