Enrique José Bolaños Geyer was the President of Nicaragua from 2002 to 2007. Born on May 13, 1928, in Masaya, he had Spanish and German ancestry and was educated in the United States, graduating from Saint Louis University in 1962. A public opponent of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) during the 1980s, he served as vice president under Arnoldo Alemán. Bolaños won the presidential election against Daniel Ortega on November 4, 2001, and took office on January 10, 2002. He was a member of the Constitutional Liberal Party (PLC) and later joined the Alliance for the Republic (APRE).
