He served as the editor-in-chief of the newspaper El Tiempo for 39 years from 1942 to 1981 and continued as the general editor for another two decades until 2001. He was the father of former Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos Calderón and journalist Enrique Santos Calderón, who directed El Tiempo from 1999 to 2009. His contributions to journalism in Colombia were significant during a transformative period for the media.
