He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Columbia University in 1963, followed by a Master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1964 and 1967, respectively. He has held academic positions at SUNY Stony Brook and Purdue University, where he became a full professor. Fischbach is known for his 1986 reanalysis of the Eötvös experiment, suggesting the potential existence of a fifth force. Recently, he has investigated new physical forces related to nuclear decay parameters and the Casimir effect.
