Eric E. Becklin is an American astrophysicist born on April 6, 1940. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the California Institute of Technology and has been a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at UCLA since 1989. Becklin serves as the Chief Scientist and Director Designate of the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). The Becklin-Neugebauer Object is named after him and Gerry Neugebauer. He was awarded the Newton Lacy Pierce Prize for Astronomy in 1975 and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2009.
