Luis Eric Rupert de la Torre, MBE, was a veteran of the St Nazaire Raid, a prison camp escapee, and a sports shop manager in north London. Born on 16 October 1918 to a Spanish father and Irish mother in London, he served in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps before joining No. 3 Commando. He participated in Operation Archery in Norway and was captured in 1942 during Operation Chariot. After several escape attempts, he was liberated by the US forces. He received the MBE in 1997 and the Legion of Honour in 2006.
