Initially active in the Labour Party, he became known for his right-wing stance contrasting with traditional union practices, notably opposing strikes. His tenure included a notable conflict with Arthur Scargill during the miners' strike. Hammond, appointed an OBE in 1977, was also an electrician by trade and served in the Royal Engineers. He passed away in 2009, survived by his wife and sons.
