Eric Newby (born George Eric Newby) was an English author and travel writer, celebrated as one of the finest travel writers of the 20th century. He was born on December 6, 1919, in London, near Hammersmith Bridge. Educated at the schools in Paul, he joined the British Army in 1940 and served with the Black Watch in India. In 1942, he was captured as a prisoner of war by Italian forces, escaping in 1943 with a broken ankle thanks to the help of Wanda, his future wife. After his escape, he spent 10 years working for his father's business.
