Awarded the riksspelman distinction from Tobo, Uppland, he gained recognition for his musicianship during a time when folk music was emerging as a recognized art form. He contributed significantly to the development of the nyckelharpa, particularly the chromatic variant. Sahlström composed numerous folk songs, including the well-known waltz 'Spelmansglädje' and the polska 'Stormyren'. Notably, he received several honors for his cultural contributions, including awards from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
