Erich Birkenhauer was a German journalist and politician born on January 21, 1903, in Essen. He was a member of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and served as the political secretary for KPD leader Ernst Thälmann from 1932 to 1933. In 1937, he was arrested by the NKVD in the Soviet Union due to denunciations made by Herbert Wehner and was executed in 1941. Birkenhauer was posthumously rehabilitated in 1958.
