He studied at Stockholm University, earning his degree in 1971. Näslund worked as a dramaturg for Sveriges Television and served as a cultural journalist for several Swedish newspapers. His significant interest in ballet and modern dance led to the publication of various works, including his doctoral thesis on Birgit Cullberg. He was the director of Dansmuseet from 1989 to 2016.
