Erika Kornélia Szeles was a Hungarian anti-communist activist born on January 6, 1941, in Budapest. She was killed at the age of 15 during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 while participating in a street battle against Soviet forces. After initially serving as a soldier, she became a nurse to aid injured fighters. She was mortally wounded on November 8, 1956, while trying to help a wounded comrade. Szeles is remembered as a symbol of freedom in Hungary, and her image gained prominence posthumously.
