Alf Erling Porsild was a Danish-Canadian botanist born on January 17, 1901, in Copenhagen and passed away on November 14, 1977, in Vienna. He grew up in the Arctic Station in Greenland and began his scientific career assisting his father, a botanist. Porsild served as curator at the National Museum of Canada from 1936 to 1945 and subsequently led its botany department until 1967. He authored numerous scientific works, particularly on the flora of Arctic Canada and the Rocky Mountains, and popularized the term 'pingo' from Inuit language into scientific use.
