Ernest M. Howse (1902-1993) was the 21st Moderator of the United Church of Canada. Born in Newfoundland, he studied in Canada and Scotland, earning his doctorate in 1934. His thesis on the Clapham Sect was published in 1952. Howse was an advocate of the social gospel movement and held liberal views on Christianity. He served as a minister in various churches, including Bloor Street United Church until 1970, and wrote for the Toronto Star until 1979. He participated in interfaith dialogue and was active in the World Council of Churches.
