Ernest Wiehe was a Mauritian alto saxophonist, musical arranger, composer, and jazz musician, born on June 2, 1944, and died on June 3, 2010. He returned to Mauritius after spending ten years in the United States, where he taught at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Widely regarded as a pioneer of jazz music in Mauritius, he inspired a generation of local musicians. Since 2001, he taught at the Atelier Mo'Zar, founded by José Thérèse, a disciple of Wiehe. In 2004, he composed music for the film Bénarès directed by Barlen Pyamootoo.
