Ernst Birke was a German historian born on April 3, 1908, in Görbersdorf, Landkreis Waldenburg, and died on November 14, 1980, in Marburg. He was closely associated with Hermann Aubin and is linked to the 'Breslauer Schule' of Eastern research. Birke was significantly involved in National Socialism and is regarded as a key figure in the cultural Nazification of Silesia. After World War II, he worked at the Marburger Herder Institute and became a full professor in Duisburg in 1966. His research focused on the relationship between France and Central Eastern Europe in the 19th century and the history of Silesia.
