Sir Ernst Boris Chain was a British biochemist born in Germany who, along with Howard Florey, was among the first to prepare penicillin in pure form for therapeutic use as an antibiotic. Although penicillin is not a universal cure, its effectiveness in treating certain infectious diseases makes it one of the most significant medical discoveries of the 20th century. Chain and Florey were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945, alongside Alexander Fleming, the accidental discoverer of penicillin. In 1969, Chain was knighted.
