Erving Goffman (June 11, 1922 - November 19, 1982) was a Canadian sociologist and social psychologist, regarded as one of the most influential American sociologists of the 20th century. In 2007, he ranked sixth in the Times Higher Education Guide among authors in the humanities and social sciences. Goffman served as the 73rd president of the American Sociological Association. His best-known contribution to social theories is his work on symbolic interactionism, which he explored in his 1956 book 'The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life'. Other significant works include 'Asylums' (1961), 'Stigma' (1963), and 'Frame Analysis' (1974).
