Erwin Neher is a German biophysicist born on March 20, 1944, in Landsberg am Lech, Bavaria. He shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1991 with Bert Sakmann for their development of the patch-clamp technique, which allows the study of ion channels in cells. Neher studied physics at the Technical University of Munich and later obtained a Fulbright scholarship to study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is currently the director at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, Germany, and a professor at the University of Göttingen.
