Esmé Kirby was a conservationist born Esmé Cummings on August 31, 1910, in Croydon. She established the Snowdonia National Park Society in 1958 to protect the mountains from development. Following her marriage to Thomas Firbank, they set a women's record on the Welsh 3000s. After his departure for World War II, Kirby managed their hill farm solo. She later led conservation efforts with her second husband, Major Peter Kirby, and founded the Esmé Kirby Snowdonia Trust after leaving the society in 1991. She was instrumental in restoring red squirrels to Anglesey, where they thrive today.
