Essei Ōkawa (Etsusei Ōkawa) was a Japanese children's literature writer born on July 6, 1930, in Nagano Prefecture. His original name is Yoshio. He lived in Tokyo during his childhood until World War II forced him to evacuate to his maternal family's home. After graduating from Waseda University, he became interested in the revival of folktales, influenced by Junji Kinoshita. He won the Sankei Children's Publishing Culture Prize in 1980 for his work 'Tanabata Mukashi.' He also wrote works related to atomic bomb themes.
