Born on February 28, 1911, in Denain, he began his career as a schoolteacher and later became a school director. A resistance fighter during WWII, he served as vice-president of the Roubaix municipality after Liberation and was elected to various local and national positions, including municipal councilor and deputy. Doyen resigned from the Communist Party's membership in 1949 due to disagreements with the party's positions.
