Eugene Merle Shoemaker, also known as Gene Shoemaker, was an American astronomer born in Los Angeles on April 28, 1928, and died in Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia on July 18, 1997. He is considered one of the founders of planetary science. His wife, Carolyn Shoemaker, is also an astronomer and has discovered over 800 asteroids, making her the person who has found the most asteroids.
