He was deeply influenced by American dance forms such as the cakewalk and minstrel shows after frequent visits to the US as a child. He studied under Mary Wigman, then moved to the US with his wife, Leni Bouvier, where they embraced Harlem Renaissance influences. He arranged the notable dance 'Mechanical Ballet' for the musical 'Fine and Dandy' in 1930 and appeared in a short film in 1934, showcasing his talents.
