Evgenij Nikolaevič Somov was a Russian chess composer born on April 15, 1910, in Moscow. He adopted the double name Somov-Nassimovitch in the early 1930s and composed around one hundred chess studies starting in 1926. Son of author Nikolai Fjodorovich Nassimowitsch and Bolshevik Nina Iwanowna Somowa, he worked as a proofreader and was arrested in 1943 for anti-Soviet propaganda. He was committed to a psychiatric hospital in Kazan, where he died on July 22, 1944. His works remained published despite the repression, as he was considered a victim of Stalinist persecution.
