He is renowned for being the personal coach of world champion Viktor Klimov, with whom he collaborated throughout Klimov's sporting career. Novikov is also recognized for his role as a coach in the Donetsk professional cycling team, ISD Continental Team. He has been honored as a distinguished coach of the USSR.
