Expedito José de Sá Parente was a Brazilian chemical engineer born in Fortaleza on October 20, 1940. He graduated from the National School of Chemistry of the then University of Brazil in 1965 and achieved a master's degree in Chemical Engineering the following year. Parente developed the world's first patent for biodiesel production in 1983. Despite its significance, the process was never utilized due to governmental disinterest. He founded Tecbio in 1999, which became a major producer of biodiesel in Brazil. He passed away on September 13, 2011.
