He established the first professional theater troupe in the Faroe Islands, Gríma, in 1977. With extensive training in acting and directing, he served as the principal of the Drama School in Aarhus from 1979 to 1986 and later restructured Gríma into Tjóðpallur Føroya. Johannessen was one of the most prolific directors in Danish theater history, with over 200 productions, earning significant recognition, including lifetime support from Statens Kunstfond and the Faroese cultural prize.
