F. C. Kohli was a key figure in India's software industry, being the co-founder and first CEO of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the largest software services company in India. He was also associated with other Tata Group companies and served as the president of NASSCOM, the Indian IT services advocacy organization. In recognition of his contributions to the Indian software industry, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2002, India's third highest civilian award, and is often referred to as the 'father of the Indian IT industry'.
