F. David Mathews is an American public servant and author born on December 6, 1935. He served as the U.S. Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare from 1975 to 1977 under President Gerald Ford. Additionally, he held the position of President of the University of Alabama for non-consecutive terms. Mathews has been the President and CEO of the Kettering Foundation since the 1980s and is known for his writings on democratic practice and education.
