Filiberto Ojeda Ríos was a Puerto Rican independentist leader and supporter of armed struggle, known for leading the Ejercito Popular Boricua, or Los Macheteros. Born on April 26, 1933, he was engaged in several terrorist activities including a notable armored car robbery. He fled to New York and formed the Movimiento Independentista Revolucionario Armado. Captured in 1985, he escaped in 1990, receiving a 55-year prison sentence in absentia. Ojeda Ríos lived in hiding, giving recorded speeches until his death in a confrontation with the FBI on September 23, 2005.
