Florin Abelès was a Romanian-born French physicist specializing in optics. Born in 1922 in Galați, Romania, he developed transformation matrix formalism for calculating light transmission and reflection through thin dielectric layers in his 1949 doctoral thesis. He introduced an equivalent recursive method during the first X-ray reflection measurement by Lehmann-Butler in 1954. His work on Abelès matrices and Parratt recursion has been crucial for multilayer investigations using X-ray or neutron reflection. He founded the Journal of Optical Communications in 1969 and served as its editor until 1993, passing away in Paris in 2005.
