He is recognized for his contributions to the study of spatial and temporal characteristics of visual perception, and he pioneered quantitative and computer-based methods for investigating the nervous system. Ratliff introduced the concept of disinhibition in the organization of neurons and significantly influenced sensory physiology through his research on Mach bands. Additionally, he explored the intersection of art and science, examining the effects of Neo-Impressionist works and Chinese painting from the Song Dynasty.
